Dear Colleagues,

The ESM Research Group and ATHENA are pleased to invite you to an engaging virtual panel discussion exploring the evolving role of the Research Excellence Framework (REF) within UK Higher Education. This 2nd Research Forum is co-organised by ATHENA members CBI (University of Derby), TRC (Edinburgh Napier University) and CERTE (University of Sunderland). The event will be held on 29th May 2025 at 10:00 (GMT).

Our expert panel includes:

Prof. Anna Leask, Edinburgh Napier University, UK

Associate Prof. Eleni (Elina) Michopoulou, University of Derby, UK

Prof. Nikolaos Pappas, University of Sunderland, UK

About the 2nd Research Forum:

Research, Impact, and Environment—the three pillars of REF—are central to shaping academic strategy, practice, and institutional reputation. In this session, our panel will:

  • Unpack how these pillars intersect and influence each other

  • Discuss the implications for academic practice, publishing, and career development

  • Reflect on how institutions are adapting to REF in the current UK HE environment

  • Explore strategies for navigating these evolving expectations

Whether you're involved in research planning, REF submissions, or simply seeking to better understand the landscape you're working in, this session offers valuable insights and a space for thoughtful discussion.

Don’t miss this opportunity to engage with REF beyond the metrics and explore what it means for your academic journey.

Attendance is free and all are welcome! You can attend the event by getting connected at the designated date and time at the relevant MS Teams link.
